Metropolitan Police Service Vehicles
The MPS operates and maintains a fleet of over 500 vehicles which are used for a range of duties, including:
Incident Response Vehicles (IRVs) are used for patrol and emergency response
Traffic units are used to patrol the highways, reduce traffic offences and encourage road safety
Area cars are used for patrol and pursuit duties
Protected carriers are used for public order duties
Control units are used for incident command and control purposes
Armoured multi-role vehicles areused for public order duties, airport duties or as required
General purpose vehicles are used for general support and transportation duties of officers or equipment
Training vehicles are used to train police drivers
The majority of vehicles have a service life of three to five years. The Metropolitian Police Servicen will be replacing or upgrading all of their vehicles each year.
The MPS Air Support Unit operates 2 Eurocopter EC 145 helicopters, using the call signs India 98 and India 99. These helicopters are marked in police livery and
used for a range of operations. They each cost £5.2 million and have a service life of ten years, meaning they will become due for replacement in 2020.
